How do I even begin? Dr Zare, life changer, life saver, my real-life guardian angel. I had vertical sleeve gastrectomy on April 10th, 2017. On the day of my surgery I weighed in at 393 lbs. Today, 15 months later, I can say, very proudly, I weigh 199 lbs!!! I think I'm still processing that... My surgery went off without a hitch. I couldn't have had a better experience from the planning stages with Amelia to post recovery. He is by far the best in the business. The only thing I wish I could change, is that I had the courage to do it years ago... Thank You Dr Zare, for giving me my life back, for giving my son his mommy back, & for giving my husband his wife back. You literally changed my life.

I'd been considering bariatric surgery for several years. On the recommendation of my Dr. Jon Scott I chose Dr. Zare. I was told that there was no second choice. Dr. Zare is the very best. I spent 6 months preparing for my Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, meeting monthly with Dr. Zare, and had a successful surgery in 12/27/2019 just before the end of the year, thank you Dr. Zare.

I want to update my review and say how thankful I am for Dr. Zare and the VSG surgery. My surgery was 8/27, so just a little over 7 months ago. Today I was at a dog show and was able to not only show my own dog but also took 3rd place with him in the herding group. Before my surgery I could barely walk around the block and now I can walk a mile with my husband and the dogs and also walk fast enough to show my own dog and have success! I couldn't have done this without Dr. Zare's help. If you are on the fence about getting weight loss surgery get off the fence and call Dr. Zare's office to make an appointment. It's a huge life changer.

Dr Zare helped me with a bariatric sleeve operation. He and his staff helped me understand and what to expect regarding every aspect of the process - pre-op, during the procedure, and post-op.
I was of course apprehensive of the whole thing at first, but Dr Zare and his whole team demonstrated through action that they really care about the people they help, and it shows in everything they do.
Dr Zare has a great "bedside manner" - he's personable, polite, friendly, and is happy to answer any questions - with pictures ;-). No "me surgeon, you patient" attitude here.
Finally, I will say that any concerns I had about having this procedure were unfounded -- while it is of course a big decision, NONE of the things I was worried about came to pass, and a lot of this is due to Dr Zare and his team, and the excellent preparation and care they provide.
Stop worrying and just do it.

I had my VSG surgery 08/05/2019 and I am down 41lbs as of today! (9/12/2019) Dr. Zare and his staff are THE BEST! They made me feel comfortable and confident throughout the whole process. They were patient, kind, encouraging, and very helpful. The girls at the front were very sweet, and Dr. Zare was very kind as well. He made me feel so comfortable that I didn't have any second thoughts at all. The day of surgery, I was SO ready, my family was more nervous than I was. I have a very complicated health history, and Dr. Zare was incredibly thorough and compassionate in preparing me for my new lifestyle. With his guidance, I made gradual changes every month, improving my health and my thinking so that I would be in optimum condition for surgery.

It is fair to say that Dr. Zare and this surgery has changed my life more than I'd ever even hoped. I was insulin dependent diabetic, I had high blood pressure and persistent asthma. Since I left the hospital, my blood sugar has completely normalized, my blood pressure is perfect and I have not wheezed or coughed in weeks. I am off all medications for these conditions, and i could not be happier.

To anyone in search of a surgeon, you could do no better than Dr. Zare. He and his staff not only have amazing knowledge and skill but are the most compassionate and attentive medical and professional staff who have cared for me. I was as prepared as I could be, and Dr. Zare and his staff are always there to answer my questions and follow up on my condition and progress. He and his staff are simply the very best there is.

Dr Zare did my gastric sleeve in 2015. I work at a local hospital OR and he came highly recommended by the nursing and anesthesia staff. At almost 4 years post sleeve I am very happy with my choice of surgeon and the gastric sleeve weight loss surgery. I wasn't sure which surgery was right for me but he knew the sleeve was the best option and explained why. I have two friends who have also had the same surgery with Dr Zare with successfully results. I see Dr Zare twice a year for follow up which is very motivating to keep the weight off. He truly loves what he does and cares deeply for his patients.

Dr Zare, you're a magician. My weight has dropped by 50 pounds. A1C has dropped from 10.9 to 7 in a matter of 8 months. Labs look normal. From being very sick last October 2018, I'm now feeling like 35 years old. I can walk a mile without sitting. Previously I would sit every 25-30 steps. Thanks so much.

I had a full sleeve gastrectomy and was understandably apprehensive approaching what was to be my first surgery of any type. He and his staff were completely professional, always calming and very thorough.

Im only a bit over a month post-op. Both pre-op and post-op have been wonderfully handled by the staff and I'd highly recommend Dr Zare for any bariatric needs.

I wish I can give Dr. Zare 10 stars as he is one of the best doctors I've ever dealt with. He was recommended to me by my cardiologist to have the gastric sleeve preformed. I resisted and resisted and finally went in for an evaluation. He went over the different options with me and never put any pressure on me to do the surgery, he just gave me the information I needed to make my own decision. I was going to do the surgery, but After much pressure from friends and family, I put the surgery off for a year. After gaining even more weight, I went back to him to do the surgery. There was no judgment or questions about why I didn't do it sooner. He just reviewed the information with me and again let me make my own decision.

His staff is simply amazing! They are kind, caring and always ready and willing to answer any questions or concerns. They took care of all the insurance paperwork and scheduled the surgery. I was very limited on my timeline for the surgery, but they made it work.

The detailed information that I was given eased my mind as I was taken step-by-step through the preop, the hospital stay and the postop.

The surgery went very smooth and the recovery time was minimal.

I am now more than 70 pounds lighter (about 35% of my bodyweight) and off all of my cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes medications. I am exercising and able to do about 35 push-ups at a time! I could barely do one before. I can honestly say Dr. Zare saved my life!

Dr. Zare is AMAZING!! I am so glad I chose him to be my surgeon. He did a wonderful job on my Roux-en-Y surgery and Gallbladder removal on 11/29/11. When I first met him, I instantly felt comfortable with his ability and was very confident with my decision to do the surgery and have him as my surgeon.

Dr Zare performed the gastric sleeve surgery on me and I do not think it could have went any smoother. I went for the initial consultation in April and had the surgery in June. From the first appointment to the follow ups, it has been smooth, professional, and so easy. Dr. Zare is great, had no complications after the surgery, and he broke down the process so it's easy to understand. Amelia is such a star! She is so patient when explaining everything and so easy to work with regarding all the necessary pre-surgery requirements. If I had to re-do my surgery, I would definitely choose Dr. Zare again!

Dr. Zare performed my gastric bypass surgery in Aug 2012. He was absolutely fantastic. Very professional and did a awesome job. I have lost about 150lbs so far and would highly recommend Dr. Zare. Outstanding doctor! Dr. Zare changed my life with bariatric surgery in 2010. My health has improved dramatically, no more high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or GERD! I could not be happier. Dr Zare and his staff are amazing! I had a double hernia and after 4 weeks I am now almost fully recovered. He did make it sound a little faster to recover from than it was, but I guess it's better to not worry about 1 week of pain vs one day? Every aspect of my diagnosis and surgery was very professionally and efficiently handled by the doctor and his staff. Even the surgical center that is used was amazing.

Dr. Zare removed my Gallbladder about a year ago. Everything went smoothly and perfectly. I did not have any complications after the surgery. Then my mother who is about 85 years old with cardiovascular complications was hospitalized for stomach pain due to gallbladder stones. Had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy procedure performed by Dr. Zare last year. Everyone in the office was friendly and helpful from the time I walked in. The doctor explained the procedure during the consultation visit and thoroughly answered all questions. The procedure went as anticipated and I am very pleased with the very minimal scarring.

I was referred to Dr. Zare by another doctor that I respect very much. Dr. Zare was very thoughtful when working with me to get my appendix removed. I had some unusual circumstances, and some overseas travel to consider. Now that the procedure is done, everything went exactly to plan, and I am looking forward to returning to full physical activity.

I had been suffering for a year with a pilonidal cyst that would not go away. I had seen several surgeons before Dr. Zare who mentioned very invasive methods for the removal of the cyst. Dr. Zare was accommodating and scheduled me within a week for a consultation followed by surgery. Generally the surgery can take up to 6 weeks to recover from, but with his thorough & conservative approach I had no complications after my surgery and was back to normal after only 2-3 weeks. A little over two years ago, Dr. Zare did my Nissen Fundoplication for my GERD. I went from being extremely ill and unable to eat anything without reflux to having a perfectly normal stomach. I can now eat anything I want. I have a cup of coffee every morning and a glass of wine a few times a week.

Before surgery I experienced constant indigestion, bloating, trapped gas, and delayed motility. Now I have none of these symptoms.

Prior to surgery I took Aciphex, Reglan, Axid, and Simethicone regularly; now I take only one Aciphex.

I wish I had done the surgery sooner, because it radically improved the quality of my life.

If you need to have a Nissen Fundoplication, you won't find a better surgeon than Dr. Zare.

I had to have a small lump removed and I was referred to Dr Zare. I wasn't sure what to expect since I hadn't had this minor surgery done before. I went to his office and was immediately impressed how nice the staff was and how nice the office was. Dr Zare was on time for my appointment and was very nice. He explained everything to me and when the surgery was done a month later, he did a great job. I can't even see the scar anymore! If I had to have another surgery done, I would immediately seek Dr Zare out again to do it no questions asked! He did a great job and took great care of me.

Dr. Zaré is a great surgeon. I went to him after being in the ER due to gallstones and a gallstone attack. I knew surgery was the best option for me and Dr. Zaré made the whole process easy for me. When I met him, he asked some questions and knew surgery was the best option also. He explained how it would be a laparoscopic surgery and would take about an hour for the whole procedure. After the procedure I had some pain but with the help of family I was able to get through the first couple days of the pain. By day 3 post op I felt pretty normal and was eating a normal low fat diet. I went back to work after a week and felt fine. Recovery has been easy considering and I appreciate Dr Zaré and even his staff (Amelia) who worked with me to plan surgery and was able to email me any notes I needed. I would go back to Dr Zaré if I ever need another general surgeon!

My dad needed to have his gallbladder removed so after doing some research we decided to book an appointment with Dr. Zareh. From the initial appointment to the day of surgery, everything went great and smooth. My Dad and I were very impressed with his office follow-ups and how easy the whole process was. Dr. Zare took very good care of me on my emergency appendectomy surgery. I went to Good Samaritan Hospital ER with stomach pains , and he came to do my surgery at midnight. He was caring and gentle, and made me feel like I was in very good hands. He did a beautiful job on my surgery - I was done in 1 hour, with just 3 little "mosquito bite-like" marks on my belly. In fact, one of them is in my belly button so you can't even see it.

His staff and billing department are very professional and efficient. We had to re-bill because my insurance didn't realize he was a participating provider on my plan, and his office was willing to wait patiently with my bill, until it got straightened out. Thank you very much, Dr. Zare!

Recommended by my GP, turned out to be an awesome surgeon, saved my life. After he heard my story of my illness and received the results of my colonoscopy exam, he saw the urgency of my blocked digestive system and fit me in his surgery schedule in a 2 days. With precision surgeon expertise and his medical team, they adjusted to the larger, longer, and a successful surgery, I felt no more pain (just sore) even without pain medication, even when I cough or sneeze - no pain, and well on my way to complete recovery! Terrific bedside manner. Straight to the point and thoughful doctor who took the time to really explain my symptoms and the surgery to fix me! This is the third time I have had to have surgery and the smoothest least painful surgery ever. If you find yourself in the unhappy place of having to have surgery, this is the best surgeon to fix you.

I had my gallbladder removed by Dr Marc Zare by Laparoscopy procedure last May as out patient. He was recommended by my gastroenterologist Dr Balaa and after my first consultation with Dr Zare I felt confident he was the right surgeon for me. Surgery at Good Samaritan went very well. I had good post instructions which I carefully followed, and I was back to normal pretty fast. I have had no problems at all since surgery and highly recommend Dr Zare, his staff is also very nice and competent.

After reading a couple of posts from people which have permanent pain after having hernia surgery and that their life became the hell, I was very scared. I spent hours and hours reading the reviews here on Yelp in order to find a good surgeon. That is how I have found Marc M Zare, MD. I had hernia surgery almost two months ago. I never use any pain killer. Two days after surgery I was in a party for a couple of hours not thinking about surgery I had. Dr. Zare is an extraordinary surgeon.

I had my hernia surgery four weeks ago by Dr. Marc M Zare. He did laparoscopic surgery it was very successful. Recovery was fast. I was able to get back to my daily routine in one week as he had said to me during the consultation. His staff is very nice and explained in detail about the surgery and follow up that was needed. I have a very high respect about the Dr. Marc for his experience in subject matters, he is a great surgeon.

Dr. Zare did laparoscopic surgery to repair a hernia. Every aspect of my experience with him was positive. He and his staff do everything possible to make the experience as effortless as a surgery can be. I'm 93 years old and was apprehensive about having major surgery, especially a double hernia operation. Dr. Zare' was recommended by my primary care doctor and he couldn't have picked a better surgeon. The operation went smoothly, and I took only two pain pills as a precautionary action as suggested by Dr. Zare'. After that, no pills, no pain. This is the second review I am writing for Dr. Marc Zare. the first was in 2017 when I had Hiatal Hernia surgery. In July 2018 I had surgery to repair a large groin hernia. During the course of this surgery Dr. Zare discovered two smaller hernias that were repaired at the same time. By using the laparoscopic surgery procedure only three small incisions were required minimizing recovery time. I was back to my full, active schedule in about two weeks.

I highly recommend Dr. Zare for his surgical skills also his kind, caring mannerisms. His medical staff is competent, professional, and thorough. I would not hesitate to call Dr. Zare again should I require his medical expertise.

I had an inguinal hernia and went to Dr Zare. I think mine was a very straightforward case of laparoscopic surgery, and Dr Zare did a fine job -- nothing unexpected, quick recovery, he answered all my questions, no follow-on problems. I recommend him.

After my consultation visit with Dr. Zare in August of this year where he came across extremely knowledgeable and answered all my questions, so I decided to have my bi-lateral laparoscopic hernia surgery done by Dr. Zare. I had the surgery two weeks after the initial consultation. I am extremely happy with the results. My stomach area was a bit swollen for a few days but it's normal for this type of surgery. Had very little pain the first day and just took Tylenol for relief. Again, no complications experienced. I went easy the first two days after the surgery. Has been two months since Dr. Zare repaired my hernia. I'm completely back to normal (actually was pretty much back to normal after about 3 weeks). When I compare notes with friends who have had inguinal hernias like mine, they can't believe it.

Dr. Zare performed my 3rd hernia repair surgery in the last 4 years. I experienced recurrence/complications after my two previous procedures (by other physicians) and came to Dr. Zare with the hopes of fixing this issue once and for all. He did not disappoint. He was professional and highly informative throughout the entire process. After a smooth and successful surgery, I have made a full recovery and returned to my normal active lifestyle. Simply a fantastic experience! Dr Zare fixed my 2-centimeter umbilical hernia. Everything was great, scheduling, front desk, and Dr Zare himself! Recovery was easy. Just took Tylenol for 6 days. After that back to normal. Couldn't exercise for about 2-4 weeks after surgery but that is ok.

Dr. Zare has done more than 3000 hernia surgeries without any complications. My own surgery was a relative "piece of cake". The surgery lasted 30 mins. I didn't need pain meds at home, beyond two Tylenol that night. Walked fine the next day and got back on the elliptical machine the second day after surgery. I was jogging within 5 days and playing tennis again within 10 days. 3 weeks later I can say I'm 100% recovered. I give this surgeon and the staff at Knowles Surgery Center my highest rating. If your need laparoscopic surgery, especially for an inguinal hernia, stop searching and call him. Although your results could differ, you'd be lucky to have results like mine!

The below review is written on behalf of my non-computer savvy father. I had a ruptured hernia. For this problem, Dr. Zare was recommended to me. He examined me and discussed my problem with me. After this lengthy discussion, I felt very confident in his abilities. He later performed surgery on me using a new method that was less invasive. After the surgery, I was very happy with the results. I would recommend him very highly to anyone.

It’s been just over one year since Dr. Zare repaired my inguinal hernia and this review is unfortunately long overdue. Bottomline: I loudly echo all the five-star comments below. Read on for the specifics around my case:
I did EXTENSIVE research online -- read several technical papers and closely reviewed statistics between open and minimally invasive repairs. I live in Marin County and was offered multiple surgeons in Marin and San Francisco that I ruled out based on my research. I found Dr. Zare in San Jose and like others was convinced after my appointment with him. Thorough, thoughtful, experienced, confident and candid are all words that describe Dr. Zare's style in our first interaction. By total chance, there was a cancellation in Dr. Zare's surgery schedule, and I was able to get in for the procedure the very next day. Normally, I'd have wanted to "sleep on it" but given the research I'd done and the quality of the discussion we had regarding my options and likely outcomes I felt completely comfortable.
I forgot to mention that I was 42 at the time of surgery and had developed the hernia mountain biking to stay in shape between triathalons. I was focused on quality of repair and rapid recovery time and believe Dr. Zare delivered both well beyond my expectations.
I was home by noon the day of surgery. After a restful afternoon on the sofa w/ice and OTC pain meds, I was able to go for a short walk to the end of the block and back around 5 pm. My core felt tight but no pain. I slept well w/no pain and the only time I noticed pain was getting out of bed too quickly the next morning. I slowed down and took more OTC pain meds and was fine. I gradually lengthened and quickened my walks over the next week and was able to comfortably jog at 9 - 10 days. Punchline is that I did a sprint tri 29 days post surgery and felt great during and after. It’s now one year, several races, P90X workouts later and I can honestly say that the hernia repair never enters my mind.
I share all this not to brag, but to attempt to give you a sense of the quality of Dr. Zare's work. I can only credibly speak to my own experience and am certainly not recommending my unendorsed post op routine for someone who's not otherwise pretty fit going into surgery. However, If you're an athletic person, have done your research and determine minimally invasive surgery is your best option, look no further!

I had an inguinal hernia and Dr. Zare performed laparoscopic surgery to correct it. The whole staff was very efficient in setting up the appointments, communicating to me, prepping me for surgery, and completing the surgery and recovery. I was pain-free after the surgery and there were no problems. I was transferred to the operating room and was waiting to be told they were going to put me under. Next thing I knew I was in recovery and waking up. All done in less than 45 minutes! The surgery was done in an operating theatre near Knowles Street, not in a hospital. I was originally concerned about this but it was not a problem at all. Everything was set up and done professionally. I appreciate how the excellent staff valued my time and got me in and out while thoroughly answering all my questions. I also was impressed that each of the personnel took the additional repetitive steps of asking me the same questions to make sure I was the correct patient coming in for the correct procedure. This tells me they follow a strict, clear process to follow to avoid any errors. I would go back to Dr. Zare and his staff any time in the future if I ever need surgery again. They are the best!!

I am very pleased with Dr Zare and his care. I had an inguinal hernia that needed repair. The surgery was easy and fast, I was fully recovered in about two weeks.

I was diagnosed about 12 years ago with the hernia, but since it didn't bother me I never got it done. About 3 years ago I decided it was better to take care of it now, while it wasn't an emergency since these don't heal by themselves. I started looking for a doctor, but never found anyone I felt comfortable with. The last guy I saw wanted to do an open surgery and that didn't appeal to me.

Through my research, I knew it was important to find a surgeon who had done a LOT of laparoscopic surgeries - because these require a lot of skill. I couldn't find anyone in San Francisco that had done a lot of these. Through YELP, I saw Dr. Zare's reviews and decided to make an appointment to see how I felt with him.

I had my first consultation with Dr. Zare and he seemed very capable and confident, and had done hundreds (if not thousands) of these surgeries. He was the only doctor I've seen over 12 years that I trusted with my surgery. I made an appointment right away and decided to just get it done. Dr. Zare made it sound as routine as could be.

I didn't think about the surgery at all until the day of. Amelia, his assistant, took care of the scheduling, insurance pre-approvals, and anything else needed. The day of the surgery I showed up at the outpatient surgery center, got the IV put in, pre-op prep done, and went into the surgery room. Dr. Zare was there, and next thing I know I'm awake and my hernias are repaired.

Went home that same day, it felt like someone had punched me in the stomach but there was no pain when laying down or standing up, it was just during the transition from one position to the other. I took the pain meds he prescribed only that day. I was on Advil the next morning for a couple of days. I was up and walking that same evening (carefully), and up and walking/going outside the next day. Driving was a bit tough because of getting in and out of the seat so I minimized it. I had my surgery on a Tuesday. By Monday I was back at work.

No complications, recovery was exactly as Dr Zare described. When the nurse from the surgery center called me the next day to check in, she asked me to rank my pain level from 0-10. I said 0, because standing up I felt no pain.

It was worth waiting 12 years to find Dr. Zare. I wouldn't trust my laparoscopic repair to anyone else! Thank you Dr. Zare.

He was very attentive and informative, making sure I understood the procedure and answered all my questions. I was very pleased with the results, and recovery time. I had practically no pain after the surgery, and after only a day away from work, felt comfortable enough to go about my normal daily activities.

I would also recommend the Silicon Valley Surgery Center on Bascom Ave where the procedure was performed. Their staff and facilities were equally efficient, very friendly and professional.

I had inguinal hernia for over a year and finally I decided to get it treated. After research and talking to doctors I decided for laparoscopy. Overall I had good experience with his performance and work ethics. He explained in advance about details of procedure to my satisfaction. I found him very professional, competent, calm, and pleasant. My only advice is that he should make one courtesy after the surgery to check if patient needed help or advice. I had issues which took longer for me to sort out myself.
